Lagos State University, LASU Unveils Safety & Security Mobile Application Called ‘LASU-Monitor’
Fresh from introducing the Online Course Evaluation Portal for
students, the Lagos State University, through the Department of Computer
Science, Faculty of Science, has unveiled a safety and security mobile
Application named ‘LASU-Monitor’.
The LASU-Monitor is an online
Application which enables users, in this case, staff and students of the
University, to make real-time report of security and medical
emergencies to relevant officers/offices of the University at the press
of a button.
The App, which is free and can be downloaded on the Google PlayStore has the following features:
*Real time Locator System with which a person in crisis can be traced;
*Panic Button to alert the Security Team on Sexual Harassment and other emergencies on campus;
*Real-time News from the Centre for Information Press and Public Relations;
*Medical Emergency Alert, designed to alert the campus medical center/clinic of urgent situation;
* Safety tips and direct contact line to report weapons on campus,
person in crisis, report an incidence, fire and smoke, guidance and
counseling, etc, amongst others.
While unveiling the Application
to Students this afternoon, at the MBA complex, the leader of the App
design team, Dr. Toyin Enikhuomehin, revealed that the App is the first
of its kind in Nigeria and a way of using technology to guarantee the
safety of students of the University.
Dean, Students Affairs, Dr.
Femi Obayori, while speaking to the students at the demonstration
thanked the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, SAN and the
Department of Computer Science for making the App possible. He also
appreciated the Dean, Faculty of Science for doing a remarkable
turnaround with innovations in the faculty.
Dr. Obayori further urged the students to introduce the App to their colleagues so that the benefits can be maximized by all.
He warns that the App is free and meant for use by the students for
their safety and security, nothing that any use different from the one
it was designed for means the students will not be condoned.
The University ‘s Chief Security Officer, Mr K.O Kolade, simc, also spoke at the demonstration :
“With reference to so many reforms going on in the University, you are
lucky to be part of Nigeria ‘s best state university. Even before this
App, we at the Security Department operate proactive intelligence
security. We are a model for many other institutions in Nigeria and our
response time is almost immediate. So you can be sure when you alert us,
we will be there asap.
However, I advise you not to raise false alarm or misuse of the App.”
The Coordinator, Centre for Information Press and Public Relations, Mr. Adekoya in his brief submission stated:
The LASU-Monitor App will help us solve the problem of information
dissemination directly to the students which we have been trying to do
before now. You will be able to access information directly whenever
there is any.
Ensure to also tell others about this so they can know what is happening.”
The President of the Lagos State University Students Union (LASUSU), Mr
Olawale Oladele (Ola-Delz) also challenged the students to be proud of
the innovative and out it to use.
“If we say are we are LASU we are
proud, it means there is something about LASU that makes us proud. This
is an App that should make all of us proud. I urge you all to download
the App as soon as it’s up for your own safety and security.
If you are harassed, assaulted by anyone, just click and help will come.”
The App is available to both staff and students and can be downloaded on the Google Play Store for free.
